Deadline for party switch approaching

Maryland voters wishing to change their party affiliation have until June 19 to switch before the 2006 primary election, according to a written release from the Washington County Board of Elections.

According to state law, a registered voter is not allowed to change party affiliation after 9 p.m. on the Monday that is 12 weeks or 84 days before the primary, making the deadline June 19 at 9 p.m., the release states.

To change party affiliation, registered voters must either go to the county Election Board, 35 W. Washington St., Room 101, or send in a signed letter that includes date of birth and other pertinent information to the Election Board, said Tammy Derr, an Election Board clerk.

The primary election is Sept. 12. The general election is Nov. 7.

To vote in the primary election, a voter must register with a party, the release states.
