On May 9, piano students of Barbara Peters performed in a recital at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown. The recital began with a guest performance by Justin Furnia, playing the first movement of Mozart's Sonata in B-flat Major, K333, for piano.
For the past four years, Justin has been one of Peters' students, until October, when she took him to Hood College, where was accepted as a student of Noel Lester, head of the music department. Justin has since played in two honors recitals at Hood. He also studies violin locally with Deb Stottlemyer. He will be a senior at North Hagerstown High School in the fall.
Along with Mozart, other composers represented at the recital were MacDowell, Bartok, Kabalevsky, Debussy, Grieg and Gade.
Honored during the recital was senior Alisha Eberhart, who graduated from Williamsport High School and plans to attend Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. Alisha and Justin ended the recital with a duet written for Victor Borge, "C.S. Theme and Variations for one piano, four hands (give or take a hand) Op. 6," by Randall Compton. There was a great deal of laughter and applause by a most appreciative audience.
