June 11, 2006

A man police say was attempting to take a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe from Hoffman Chevrolet faces several charges following the Saturday incident, according to a press release from the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Richard Lee Young Jr., 24, address unavailable, was charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, theft, possession with intent to distribute, unlawfully taking a vehicle, malicious destruction of property over $500, malicious destruction of property under $500, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to the release.

The sheriff's department gave the following account of the incident:

An employee at Hoffman Chevrolet on Edgewood Drive reported Saturday about 12:23 p.m. that a man in the showroom was attempting to take a vehicle. Deputy Carl D. Witmer responded and found Lee in the Tahoe, with the motor running and the transmission in drive. Witmer ordered Lee out of the vehicle, but Lee resisted. When Witmer attempted to force Lee out of the vehicle, the two struggled. Three bystanders, Tim Gladney, Michael Wolf and William Whittington III, assisted Witmer until backup arrived.
