June 10, 2006

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - A man died Friday afternoon in a head-on collision on W.Va. 51 west of Gerrardstown, West Virginia State Police Sgt. G.S. Petsko said.

Petsko said the man, whose identity he could not provide, died at the scene of the accident, reported about 3:30 p.m.

The man was eastbound on W.Va. 51 in a Chevrolet HHR when a westbound Jeep crossed the center line of the two-lane highway and struck the Chevrolet head-on, Petsko said.

Petsko said the passenger in the Chevrolet and the driver of the Jeep both were transported to City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., and later transferred to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center for treatment.

Petsko could not provide the identity of the passenger of the Chevrolet or the driver of the Jeep. He said the occupants of the Chevrolet, including the deceased driver, were middle-aged, and the driver of the Jeep is in his 20s.

Petsko said he did not know the condition of either of the survivors of the accident.

Wet roads contributed to the accident, Petsko said.
