Norma A. Kelly, 77

JULY 23, 1928-JUNE 8, 2006

FREDERICK, Md. - Norma Avis Kelly, 77, of 11129 Liberty Road in Frederick, Md., died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at the Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center.

Born July 23, 1928, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Ira T. and Etha Ellen Gruber Angle.

Norma had lived in Funkstown, Md., since the age of 11. She and her husband, John, loved children and raised and cared for foster children over the years.


Norma was a homemaker and loved cooking for her family. She enjoyed flowers and loved working in her garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin Kelly, on May 29, 1995.

She attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown.

She was a member of Funkstown Senior Citizens.

She is survived by four daughters, E. Darlene Wyndham and husband, C. Kent Wyndham, of Williamsport, Md., Julie Ann Smith of Hagerstown, Donna Lee Moats and husband, Lawren "Buck" Moats, of Williamsport, and Deborah Nicole Kelly and husband, Jason Cline, of Frederick; two granddaughters, Melissa Ann Smith of Funkstown, and Sydney Morgan Cline of Frederick; four grandsons, John David Smith of Funkstown, Sean Michael Moats of Williamsport, Devon Matthew Moats of Williamsport, and Tyler Jacob Cline of Frederick; one great-granddaughter, McKenzi Ranae Smith of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Henninger; one half sister, Audrey Angle; and two brothers, Ira T. Angle Jr. and Harold "Tiny" Angle.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Darrell L. Layman will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gary L. Grove, 58

CLEAR SPRING - Gary Lee Grove, 58, of Mercersburg Road in Clear Spring, went to be with his Lord peacefully on Thursday, June 8, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born Nov. 5, 1947, in Big Spring, Md., he was the son of the late George William Grove Sr. and Mary Edna Mason Grove.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Clear Spring, Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring, National Rifle Association, Stony Cabin Rod and Gun Club and Western Maryland Sportsman Club.

Gary served as an assistant mayor and councilman with the Town of Clear Spring for more than 20 years.

He was a 1965 graduate of Clear Spring High School and was a coach for the Clear Spring Little League for many years. He was active with the Clear Spring High School Athletic and Band Boosters. He enjoyed volunteering his time to numerous children's activities and to his community. He was an avid hunter.

He was employed with the State of Maryland as a correctional sergeant at Roxbury Correctional Institution of Hagerstown for approximately 29 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam in the 357th Transportation Company.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Betty Ann Garvey Grove of Clear Spring; one daughter, Jaime Lynn Grove of Clear Spring; one son, Gary Ryan Grove of Clear Spring; four sisters, Mary Lou E. Mundey and Carol J. Shupp, both of Clear Spring, Linda K. Farrow of Hagerstown, and Dorothy L. Blevins of Big Pool; four brothers, James W. Grove of Wichita Falls, Texas, and George W. Grove Jr., Guy Robert Grove and Frederick E. Grove, all of Clear Spring; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday, June 12, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clear Spring. The Rev. Hank Mansell will officiate. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery, with military honors by Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after 1 p.m.

The Rev. Preston E. Lucas, 91

COLUMBIA, Pa. - The Rev. Preston E. Lucas, 91, of 1136 Central Ave. in Columbia, died Wednesday morning, June 7, 2006, at Lancaster (Pa.) General Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Emma Barton Haverstick Gerfin Lucas for 18 years, and the late Anna Marie Faretty Lucas, his wife of 49 years, who preceded him in death in 1988.

Born near Stanley, Va., he was the son of the late Lee and Ruth Alger Lucas.

The Rev. Lucas graduated from Brunswick (Md.) High School in 1934 and graduated from the Bible Institute of Pennsylvania (now Philadelphia College of Bible) in 1938.
