High school band reunion concert slated for June 25

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - They admit it might not be the sweetest sound ever produced, but it will be one that spans 50 years and brings together those musicians connected by their past.

The alumni and students of Greencastle-Antrim School District slated to play in a concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25, have different musical abilities today but are descending on the high school auditorium to celebrate 50 years of instrumental music in the district.

The concert, free to the public, will feature marches, patriotic songs, the district's alma mater and a medley of 1970s pop tunes, said Paul Grane, a band director in the district since 1973.

"We're trying to keep it on the light side," he said.

With alumni hailing from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and California, event organizers have been securing instruments for use by people who might not have played in years. Their "chops" will be refreshed during a Saturday afternoon practice.

"Some of them have not played in quite a long time, so we're keeping it fairly easy. I think people are excited and a little fearful," Grane said.

"I think it will come back to them," said Eric Plum, band director.

Alumni bands have been featured during Old Home Week concerts and parades, but don't typically have 75 players on a wide variety of instruments like expected June 25, Grane said.

Organizers reached alumni through 200 letters mailed in March but had their best response from word of mouth. The majority of participants are local residents, and the program includes several families.

"We really didn't know what to expect when we started this," Grane said.

A number of current students or recent graduates signed up for the performance. Alumni have joked they will rely on those players to carry the performance, Grane said.

"I hope (students) will see that you can do this forever, and I hope they can connect," he said.

Organizers hope the concert highlights what Grane called "a long history of band music in Greencastle."

"We're not looking forward to the greatest performance in the world," he said. "It's more of a reunion."
