U.S. Army Reserve Master Sgt. Scott Port of Hagerstown was presented the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the third-highest defense award authorized by the Secretary of Defense, for his service during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.
Gen. George W. Casey, commanding officer of the Multi-National Force-Iraq, awarded the medal to Port for exceptionally meritorious achievement during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq.
The award was presented Feb. 1 by Marine Maj. Gen. Mike Ennis of the Department of Defense during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Port was mobilized for one year on Oct. 1. 2004, and served in Baghdad and Kirkuk, Iraq, as a first sergeant for his unit from Nov. 2, 2004, through April 28, 2005. Upon his discharge, Port returned to his civilian job in the Washington area on Nov. 1.
