Air compressor catches fire

June 08, 2006

A diesel running air compressor caught fire this morning shortly before 9 on property off Baltimore Street where the Hagerstown Housing Authority plans to build a home for the elderly, said Ted Shankle, executive director of the housing authority.

Contractors were performing test drilling for the piece of property where the building will be erected, behind what was known as the H.L. Mills property near Potomac Towers, he said.

Hagerstown Fire Department Capt. Justin Mayhue said six firefighters put out the fire within about 10 minutes. He said hydraulic lines and diesel fuel concerned firefighters, but the fire was contained and smoldered in the air filter, which firefighters sprayed with foam after knocking down the flames.
