June 08, 2006

SMITHSBURG - A 4-year-old girl was seriously injured Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash, Maryland State Police said.

Katherine Lee Adams, 25, of Rocky Ridge, Md., was driving south on Md. 66 at Pondsville Road when she lost control of her vehicle and ran off of the road. Police said Adams, who had a 4-year-old girl in her 1997 Dodge Intrepid, struck the guardrail and veered into the northbound lane.

There, her vehicle was struck by another vehicle, which was being driven north on Md. 66, police said.

The other vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck, was driven by Steven Bumbaugh of Waynesboro, Pa., police said.

The child was taken to Washington County Hospital, where she was in critical condition Wednesday, a nursing supervisor said. She was in a child safety seat at the time of the crash.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and Bumbaugh was not injured, police said.
