Mail Call

June 07, 2006

"It has been my pleasure for the last three years to be an E. Russell Hicks parent, as well as a member of the band boosters. And although we as band boosters have had our ups and downs, our children have been superb, as have their two band directors, Ms. Hull and Ms. Kitchen, who are not paid near enough for their time and dedication. As we as eighth- grade parents and students look forward to South High, it is with profound sadness that I leave E. Russell Hicks because great things have happened there, and I will miss all the wonderful times I had with the band."

"Chris Daughtry rocks!"

"To the person who thinks the police have a bad attitude, maybe some do, but I bet there's more 'public' bad attitude. Their job gets worse every day. Maybe a bad attitude is really stress and fatigue."

- Mercersburg, Pa.

"Not only do we need to know our own evacuation plan, I think we need to know the evacuation plans for Baltimore and Washington. Are all those people planning to come here - head for the mountains? Where are they going, and if they're coming this way, what are we going to do with them?"

- Hagerstown

"In reference to motorcycle riders, I don't have anything against people riding motorcycles or anything, or anyone's hobby, but I think it's really ridiculous how a lot of these motorcycle riders get out on their bike and think that they're all that; think that they're such great people. They think getting on a motorcycle makes them a big man or a big person, which it doesn't. They're not any better than me or you or the next person. That's the way I feel about it. I've noticed whenever I'm out and about on my bicycle riding to places where I want to go, they pass me and some of these motorcycle riders look at me as if they're the only ones who can be out on the road riding their bike."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I would just like to congratulate the Hagerstown girls' Freedom 94 soccer team for placing second at the Virginia Beach tournament. Great job, girls. Also, great job, Coach Rick."

- Hagerstown

"I would just like to say that the North End of Hagerstown is a great place to live. The North High School deserves a stadium. I wish people would just get over it, because it's gonna happen, so there's no sense in complaining about it. Face it, the North End is the place to be."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to know why, if interest rates are being raised by the government and the banks are charging more money to borrow money, how come I'm not getting any more interest on my bank account? I think it's time."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to know why a permanent for your hair would cost so much, when you can buy a home permanent for $5 to $10. I recently got one at the shop, and I didn't realize that prices went up. I was charged more than $60 for a permanent, and then had to turn around and tip yet. You figure that up for a $65 permanent. Get real, people. I never could understand that. I don't tip when I go to the grocery store and they bag up my groceries and things."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling back about the stadium at North High. The reason why there's so much complaining is because every time North High needs something it's like we give it to them. How about the Clear Spring schools, the Hancock schools, some of those schools that don't get as much? It's time to give to the small communities, not just the large communities."

- Clear Spring

"I read about the person seeing a coyote in Appletown. In the last couple years I have seen one coyote and three bobcats. At the same time I saw two bobcats of different size. Just last week I saw a mountain lion two times. So watch your animals, and watch yourself, because these animals are moving in."

- Boonsboro

"I'm calling to comment on the Boonsboro orchestra concert we attended. We are new to the area and we are pleased to see such a program offered in the schools. Judging by the concert, we'll be happy to have our children involved in the orchestra program next year. Congratulations to the orchestra teacher for putting together such a fine program. It's wonderful that such offerings are available to middle school and high school students. Even the stage setting was nice."

- Boonsboro

"This is for the County Commissioners. As a Washington County taxpayer, I would like to know why the Washington County roads department paved and maintains Roberts Road west of Hancock, when they say it's a private drive."

- Hancock

"I'm calling about these railroad tracks at all these different places. They really ought to check the ones down on Hopewell Road, because they're really a mess."

- Hagerstown
