W.Va. man faces charges in shooting incident

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Hedgesville, W.Va., man was jailed Wednesday after allegedly shooting at the feet of another man following an argument Monday, police said.

Shawn Clayton Franklin, 33, of Allensville Road in Hedgesville, was charged with wanton endangerment with a firearm after West Virginia State Police officers caught up with him after he fled into the woods following an argument with another man, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records. The man told police Franklin retrieved a handgun from a parked truck and fired it once at his feet, police said.

Franklin also was charged with fleeing from police, after being discovered crawling from underneath a mobile home and leading police on a foot chase into a wooded area.

According to police, the shot was fired within several hundred yards of a children's softball game.

Franklin, who was arraigned Wednesday by Berkeley County Magistrate Sandra Miller, was being held at Eastern Regional Jail on $75,000 bail.

If convicted, he faces one to five years in prison.
