Mail call

May 31, 2006

"The letter by the editor in the Thursday, May 25 Morning Herald is flawed in a few ways. His defense of the moneys being used for the North High stadium . . . one reason everybody is upset is because the people who were putting the stadium fund together said that there would be no public moneys used. Like typical politicians, they either completely flat-out lied to us or didn't know what they were talking about as far as getting the money together. My granddaughter goes to a school here in the West End that has no air conditioning. By reading in Mail Call, I'm assuming that there are other schools in the same situation. There is a lot more we could be spending money on besides the stadium. Your defense is that it's Project Open Space money, but it's still taxpayer money. Project Open Space money is to be used for public projects, so am I to assume that the field will never be locked up and that anybody is allowed to use it, just like any other Open Space, public parks and such, that the money is supposed to go to?"

"The great firefighters' bonanza is over, and all is quiet. What were the results of all this work? What is the official name of the charity the union formed? What are they going to do with the money specifically? How about more info than just 'give to charities' as previously reported? What charities, and how much? Local clubs were forced into the tip jar program, where 50 percent of all profits went to the volunteer fire companies."

"I want to congratulate the little ladies and gentlemen of the Silver Starlettes for taking second place in the Clear Spring parade this past Saturday. You all did wonderful for taking second place the first time out in the street this year. You all do an excellent job, and you held yourself with respect and looked wonderful. To the instructors and to the leaders, you all are excellent and do an excellent job with these kids. We couldn't ask for better people. When you see the children come down those streets, you know you're going to see a nice presentation of majorettes and color guards and little drummer lines. They are just the dearest. Good luck in Saturday's parade in Sharpsburg and Sunday in Boonsboro. I know you all will shine like the little stars you are."

"To the Hedgesville top ten graduates: Make sure you get your 15 minutes of fame for your academic achievements now because if you ever go back to your high school reunions, you will never be recognized for those outstanding achievements. They will neither write nor mention the class standings. Make sure that you enjoy it now."

"Why does zoning allow junked cars without license plates to pile up on properties in Halfway? There is a law against it, but zoning doesn't seem to have any clout on anything anymore. Three property owners are doing this. No wonder we need new County Commissioners."

"I'm calling about the lady that complained about the West Virginia people going into Williamsport. I'd like to see her stop me. I go that way every day, and that's the way I'm going to go."

"I really feel bad for the couple that lost their groceries following a car accident. I think that the company that had their car stored for the night should reimburse those people for their groceries, or hopefully, their insurance will cover the loss. One time I had all my Christmas presents stolen from my car, and my insurance did cover that. I hope you're feeling better, and out of the hospital."

"This call is in response to the Mail Call about a waitress or somebody complaining about not getting a tip, and somebody said that God only gets 10 percent. God doesn't need any money. That's just to go to the preacher so he can live high off his horse. They're talking about 10 percent of your paycheck, not 10 percent of a check at the restaurant. I'm a driver, and I wouldn't mind getting 7 or 8 percent, which I never get."

"With all the breeds of dogs available for purchase, I do not understand why anyone would choose to own a pit bull or a Rottweiler, other than to send a message to the rest of us that these dogs are usually bred to defend, attack and kill."

"I have a couple questions about the illegal immigrant situation, and I'm sure we all do. I'd like to know, how do these other countries deal with their illegal immigrant problem? For example, Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Russia, or China. They must have some kind of policy about their illegal immigrants. Maybe we could get some ideas from their policies. I mean, this is the year 2006."
