Smithsburg Elementary School fourth-grader Lindsay Mowbray was named District 8 winner in the Maryland Municipal League's "If I Were Mayor" essay contest.
There are 11 districts across the state and each district winner received a $250 U.S. Savings Bond and a plaque, according to a Washington County Public Schools press release.
All winners, their parents and the students' teachers were invited to the statewide Municipal Government Celebration at the Maryland State House on May 16.
The annual essay contest is open to all Maryland fourth-grade students. Essays were limited to a maximum of 275 words, including the opening line, "If I were Mayor, I would..."
