Barry E. Shields Sr. 62

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Barry E. Shields Sr., 62, of 104 Echo Drive, died Sunday May 28, 2006 at his home.

Born Feb. 5, 1944 in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late C. Melvin and Lois V. Shatzer Shields.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot.

He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Hume McNeal Byers Post 224 AMVETS, Landis-McCleaf Detachment Marine Corps League, and Chambersburg Club, all of Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife Diane M. Luksis Shields, whom he married Aug. 26, 1983; two sons, Barry E. Shields Jr. of Chambersburg, and Samuel D. Shields of Spring Run, Pa., one stepdaughter, Darlene M. Hemler of Chambersburg; one stepson, Brian W. Stanionis of Mercersburg, Pa., one sister Christine Kuhns of St. Thomas, Pa.; one brother Thomas A. Shields of Brewster, Mass.; and six grandchildren.


Services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. John Schildt and the Rev. Dr. Neal O. Hively will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to services Wednesday.

Winfred C. Thompson, 72

KNOXVILLE - Winfred "Dick" Charles Thompson, 72, of Knoxville, Md., died Friday, May 26, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 25, 1933, in Orlando, W.Va., son of the late Charley and Leona Riffle Thompson.

He was the loving husband of the late Laura Spohn Thompson, who died in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Protestant faith.

He was employed with the B&O Chessie System in Brunswick with 44 years of service and NAPA Auto Parts in Boonsboro for five years. He was the past owner of Laura and Dick's Pizza Shop on Souder Road in Brunswick.

He is survived by one son, Richard C. Thompson and wife, Tina, of Cascade, Md.; and two grandchildren, Chad Thompson and Nichole Thompson, both of Cascade.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at 11 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road in Brunswick. Pastor Janet Comings will be officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Petersville, Md.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Emily M. Cram, 103

Emily May Cram, 103, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at the home of her daughter in Hagerstown.

Born Feb. 10, 1903, in Grand Rapids, Mich., she was the daughter of the late George A. and Ada M. Geale Backus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Cram, in 1970.

She was a member of Memorial Church of Christ in Livonia, Mich., where she was a member of the choir and substitute organist. She was a member of Hagerstown Church of Christ.

She was a member of Haven Lutheran Senior Citizens.

She is survived by one daughter, Marjorie M. Seiler of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Irene Backus, at birth, and one brother, Hubert V. Backus.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hagerstown Church of Christ. Richard McGough will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Betty J. Allen, 74

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Betty Jane McElfish Allen, 74, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at her home.

Born May 31, 1931, in LaVale, Md., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Ernest and Bertha Carder McElfish.

She played the piano for numerous churches in the Tri-county area.

She is survived by her husband, Homer Edward Allen; four children, William H. Allen and Linda J. Masters, both of Martinsburg, Larry T. Allen of Colorado and Lois M. Mohler of Winchester, Va.; one sister, Francis McElfish of Cumberland, Md.; one brother, Raymond McElfish of Florida; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Dolly; one brother, Eugene McElfish; and her stepmother, Aileen Hendra.

Memorial services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God. The Revs. Don Preston and Arnold Brown will officiate. Burial will be private in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
