Man charged in drive-by shooting

A 27-year-old man with a last known address of Hagerstown has been charged in connection with an April drive-by shooting in the city, according to a Hagerstown Police Department press release.

Von Lamar Walker, who also is known as "Smokey," was charged with first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, and wearing and carrying a handgun on his person.

According to police, he was being held on a $500,000 bond at the Washington County Detention Center Wednesday, but personnel there Sunday said nobody with his name was at the facility.

According to police, on the morning of April 12, a passenger in a vehicle in the area of Forest Street and Hamilton Lane was struck by a bullet that hit his phone carrier. The driver of the vehicle struck a car trying to flee, said police, who responded to the scene at 1:53 a.m.

Before the Forest Street and Hamilton Lane shooting, officers responded to the area of Jonathan Street and North Avenue to investigate a report of shots fired. Though officers at that time could find no evidence of a shooting, cameras in the area allowed them to determine shots were fired about 1:20 a.m.

Police believe the two incidents are related, and they say video footage from the Jonathan Street cameras show a man firing a shot toward the victim.
