Events scheduled to honor the fallen

Today

Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 will host a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. in front of the Washington County Courthouse.

The keynote speaker will be Orlyn C. Oestereich, American Legion Department of Maryland sergeant at arms and a member of Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro.

Organizations will place wreaths during the service.




Boonsboro will hold its annual Memorial Day parade at 2 p.m. The parade starts by the Boonsboro school complex and ends at Reeder's Alley on South Main Street in Boonsboro.

Monday

The annual Memorial Day parade in Waynesboro, Pa., will begin at 9 a.m. The parade starts on Main Street at Cumberland Valley Avenue and goes down Main Street, proceeding right on Broad Street and ending at Memorial Park in Waynesboro.




The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board of Directors will hold a dedication ceremony for the new Veterans' Memorial at 10 a.m. at War Memorial Park, off Tennessee Avenue in Martinsburg, W.Va.




The communities of Beaver Creek and Mount Lena will join to erect a memorial to veterans at a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at Mount Lena United Methodist Church.




Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va., will honor all veterans at a special Memorial Day celebration at 2 p.m.

During the ceremony, a Purple Heart will be awarded to Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Terry Orndorff in honor of his service.

To personally salute heroes - past and present - who have served in the military, the celebration will include a balloon release. Red, white, blue and yellow balloons, personalized with the names of those who have served in the military, will be released into the air to commemorate their brave service.

The Cumberland Valley School of Music Community Symphonic Band will present its Memorial Day concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Chambersburg (Pa.) Memorial Park bandshell.

The program will include patriotic, classical, choral, jazz and traditional concert band music and a special salute to the Armed Forces. State Sen. Terry Punt will emcee, and a color guard will post colors.

Tuesday

The Joint Veterans Council of Washington County will host Memorial Day ceremonies at 9 a.m. at Martin L. "Marty" Snook Memorial Park in Halfway.

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Charles May will be the keynote speaker.




A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. at Smithsburg Veterans Memorial Park on West Water Street.

The featured speaker will be the Rev. Mark Mooney of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Smithsburg.

A canopy and chairs will be provided.
