Halfway Park Days brings crafts, music

A community tradition returns this weekend to Martin L. Snook Memorial Park.

More than 100 arts and crafts merchants, performers and food vendors will take part in the 27th annual Halfway Park Days, organized by the Lions Club of Halfway.

The event "has grown a lot over the years," says Lions Club member Stan Johnson.

This year, along with the merchants and vendors, entertainment will include the South Hagerstown High School Jazz Band, a karate demonstration and magic shows.

Strasburg, Va.-based trio Ho-Kiss Po-Kiss will bring its music and variety show to audiences Sunday between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.

"It's different from any band you'll ever see," says Rick Yeakle, a Ho-Kiss Po-Kiss group member. The band performs recent and classic country music and rock and often impersonates the singers whose songs they perform, Yeakle says.

The three-member group morphs into the Blues Brothers to do a Motown-style song set, for example, Yeakle says.

"Elvis will probably make an appearance, along with Toby Keith," he adds. "You never know. The PussyCat Dolls might show up too!"

Ho-Kiss Po-Kiss does a spoof on the girl group, dressing up as women while singing the PussyCat Dolls' "Don't Cha" hit.

The group also takes on such personalities as Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, and Chubby Checker comes out to do "The Twist."

Halfway Park Days "is just a real nice time for families to walk and look, buy, perhaps, and listen," says Lions Club member Archie Van Norden. Proceeds from the event go toward the Lions Club community projects.
