Mary E. Howell, 93

MAY 25, 1912-MAY 21, 2006

Mary Estella Howell, 93, of Huyetts Crossroads, Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 21, 2006.

A daughter of the late Herbert and Alice Burgan, she was born at Huyetts on May 25, 1912.

She attended local schools, graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1929, and was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

She was employed by the Hagerstown Shoe Co. for 25 years, and with her husband, Edgar L. Howell, co-owned and operated the Old Trail Steak House for 50 years. She and her husband also were NPS volunteers in the C&O Canal National Park.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edgar L. Howell; granddaughter, Christy Lee McElhaney, and her husband, Mark A. Sunshine, of Boca Raton, Fla.; two great-grandsons, James R. Sunshine and Ryan L. Sunshine; and one great-granddaughter, Madison L. Sunshine, all of Boca Raton; her daughter-in-law, Georgia Lee McElhaney of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her son, James H. McElhaney; her brother, John Burgan; and her sister, Leila Burgan.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Alvin R. Wood, 81

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Alvin Ralph Wood, 81, of Myersville, Md., died Monday, May 22, 2006, at his home. He was the husband of Teresa Holzman Wood. They were married for 57 years.

Born July 15, 1924, in Kennewick, Wash., he was the son of the late Claude and Sylvia Wood.

Mr. Wood served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Eastalco Aluminum.

In addition to his loving wife, Teresa, he is survived by four children, Alvin T. Wood and wife, Sherry, of Maugansville, Md., Steven J. Wood and his wife, Rose, of Hagerstown, Md., Terrianne Ridenour of Myersville and Neil F. Wood and wife, Allison, of Boonsboro, Md.; eight grandchildren, Matthew Wood, Marcie Burleson, Stephanie Wood, Amie Stann, Corinne Ridenour, Michael Wood, Benjamin Wood and Jonathan Wood; five great-grandchildren, Madeline Wood, Morgan Burleson, Kendall Burleson, William Stann and Olivia Stann; and four sisters, Claudia Williams, Margaret Clemens, Donna Barnhill and Nora Lee Lyons. He also will be remembered by his other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers and three sisters.

The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Md., on Thursday, May 25, 2006, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Services and interment are private.

Francis E. Harne, 83

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Francis Earl "Bud" Harne, 83, of Middletown, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at College View Nursing Center.

Born June 6, 1922, near Wolfsville, Md., he was the son of the late Albert Earl and Della Mae Pomroy Harne.

He was employed by Farmers Co-Op in the fertilizer department until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Summers Harne.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Pryor, Ethel Pryor, Edna Grossnickle, Catherine Baker and Beatrice Zecher; and one brother, James Harne.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown. The Rev. David Howell will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Myersville, Md.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald K. Clark, 73

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Donald K. Clark, 73, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born Aug. 29, 1932, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Kenneth Clark and Helen Cooper Clark.

He formerly owned and operated Clark's Inc. in Berkeley Springs.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He attended Francis Asbury United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Berkeley Springs-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 60 and Moose Lodge 1483; and a former member and past president of Morgan County Board of Education.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie O'Rourke Clark; one daughter, Patricia L. Unger of Berkeley Springs; one son, Donald S. Clark of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Jane Wasson of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Sandra Sherrard of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; three grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

Services will b Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Dan Wright will officiate.
