City budget breakdown

Highlights of the 2006-07 budget the Hagerstown City Council approved Tuesday:

  • Spending will total $134.6 million (a 24 percent increase from the current budget of $108.2 million).

  • The tax rate will remain steady at 79.8 cents per $100 of assessed value. (Taxes will increase for anyone whose property values increase).

  • The business personal property tax rate will be $1.995 per $100 of assessed value.

  • Water and sewer rates are expected to increase by 3.5 percent.

  • Electricity rates are expected to go up about 42 percent under a new contract with Allegheny Energy.

  • The city will hire 10 new employees in its fire department in the coming year and tentatively plans to hire nine more the following year.

  • The city council did not commit to changes in health insurance coverage for current employees and retirees or to funding the first year of a three-year plan for higher employee wages, as recommended by a consultant.
