Mail Call

May 23, 2006

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"There seems to be a large group of uninformed people who have financial concerns about the North HIgh stadium. One thing I'll say for the proponents of this stadium is that they have asked for financial help from the Board of Education and other county organizations, but have raised a very great majority of the funds from private or corporate donations. NHHS is not getting preferential treatment. They just have some very proactive groups who are willing to work to make it happen."

"I'm calling in regard to the cats at the cemetery. I understand from the people there that they are going to be taken care of, and they're doing it in a humane way, so as to protect the cats and also to alleviate the problem at the same time."

- Hagerstown

"This message is for the person from Clear Spring who said if a person got shot with a gun, would you wear that gun around your neck, so you would feel the presence of the person. What is missing in your life? Is it love? When you love someone and they are suddenly absent from your life, you become overwhelmed with grief. It helps friends and family to heal emotionally when they place flowers and wooden crosses along the roadside. I speak from my heart, because I lost a sister and brother. Doing those things was what helped me, plus knowing their souls are going to heaven."

"I would like to know when the lights are going to be put up in the Maugansville minor league/major league area. Businesses have supported it, and we have no lights yet. We would appreciate it if the board would get on the ball and get our lights started."

- Maugansville

"I see where Doug Gansler says he's going to fight crime. I thought that's pretty much what a state's attorney's job is. He didn't say, however, that he was going to spend thousands and thousands of taxpayers' dollars to try the sniper, who's already got the death penalty in Virginia."

- Boonsboro

"I'm calling to comment on the piece in the Friday, May 19, paper about Boy Scouts, and how being a Scout is not 'cool.' That's a shame. Scouting, for all of its existence, has been a blessing and good training for boys and young men. I think anyone who makes fun of that should be ashamed of themselves."

- Hagerstown

"Someone called in about not liking 'American Idol.' I happen to love 'American Idol,' but I wouldn't think of watching sports. As a friend of mine once said, the moral of this story is 'every hog to his own slop.'"

- Clear Spring

"I read in the Friday, May 19, paper about St. Andrews Church in Clear Spring, and how they had to put new windows in. It is a blessing to have that church still standing. It looks so beautiful."

- Cascade

"Congratulations to Kyle Rice, Eagle Scout. You are a winner, and your Scouting achievements indicate that you are probably heading toward a successful and rewarding career in your life's journey. My only advice to you is to dissociate yourself from those who say that Scouting is uncool. They are, and will likely to continue to be the losers. They are immature and lack direction. Associate with those like yourself who have the qualities of good citizens."

- Hagerstown

"I'm watching about this immigration mess. Lest we forget, back in the 1830s, Texas fought to push the American and the Mexican government out of the U.S. for their independence. Was that all a lie or just a myth? If it's truth, then why is everybody so upset about the illegal immigrants that are over here and want amnesty? We pushed them out once - let's do it again. Don't tell me we can't do it, because we can."

- Hagerstown

"First of all, for the North High stadium, I think it's nice that them kids is gonna have something - maybe they could have a track and go out and run around and keep their minds and their bodies out of trouble. Secondly, I think it's outrageous that they're raising electric taxes and electric bills. What are we gonna do when people run out of money and can't pay these bills and stuff? I don't think they need any money or tax raises. It's nonsense. The city is not putting money into the roads or anything. People ought to look around and see."

- Hagerstown

"I think the City of Hagerstown should have some kind of amusement park like Six Flags or something like a water park. Maybe we would get some people to come to this town like they do Ocean City, and have money coming in for taxes and stuff. People ought to think about this. Instead of taking these farmlands and building houses for people that can't afford them now, we should have a theme park for Hagerstown."

- Hagerstown

"All you graduates who are graduating this year and next year, you'd better go to college, because there's going to be a draft."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the North High stadium. It seems like it's getting turned into the Taj Mahal."

- Hagerstown
