Fire causes hotel to be evacuated

A fire inside a wall at Sleep Inn & Suites in Hagerstown led to the evacuation of the hotel just before 7 p.m. Monday.

Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. Deputy Chief Dave Fraley said a fire in mulch outside of the hotel at 18216 Col. Henry K Douglas Drive spread to the side of the hotel and into the wall.

"The fire got into the side of the building and created a lot of smoke and soot," he said.

An employee on the second floor of the hotel saw smoke coming from one of the rooms. The smoke spread and the hotel's smoke alarms sounded.

The hotel was evacuated. Guests and employees were not allowed back into the building for about one hour, Fraley said.

He said firefighters put out the fire quickly and checked for further extension into the building. The fire was contained to the wall, Fraley said.

He said it was unclear what caused the mulch to ignite.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters from Hagerstown and Halfway also responded.
