Mail Call

"Last week, Councilman Metzner said we should put a charge on the Dumpster program. Why can't the City of Hagerstown give something to the taxpayer? We don't get anything free from the City. The County Commissioners are going to give us $150 on our taxes, not the City of Hagerstown. All they want to do is take, take, take."

- Hagerstown

"On Sunday, there were all kinds of bags and cans of trash sitting out on Locust and Franklin streets. I thought the new curb pick-up was supposed to eliminate all that."

- Hagerstown

"The level of rudeness in our society continues to amaze me. As a customer myself, I have been personally affected by the rude nature, not of sales clerks, but of other shoppers. These people often interrupt while associates are trying to assist me or someone else, and are generally rude and condescending. They allow their unruly children to destroy a store, and it's often these same individuals who complain of poor customer service. I really feel sorry for the sales clerks who must often tolerate such bad behavior. Salespeople deserve dignity and respect, no differently from anyone else. Try it, and your once-perceived bad service may turn into a pleasant experience because of your improved conduct."

"I'm new to the area, and I notice in your newspaper that a lot of times it'll say something like somebody is president of the chapter of, for instance, IAAP, but it doesn't say what IAAP is. Those of us new to the area have no idea what it is. I just wish you would spell it out instead of using initials, because the whole article doesn't even give me an idea of what it is."

"This is to the lady in Clear Spring. If someone shoots your loved one with a gun, are you going to put that gun on a chain and wear it around your neck, because just maybe their soul is hanging around that gun? Whatever."

- Clear Spring

"This is in regards to the person with back pain, complaining about workmen's compensation. First of all, workmen's compensation is only paid if you have an accident on the job and you hurt yourself. Back pain has nothing to do with workmen's compensation. If you lift something heavy that causes your back pain, that isn't considered an accident, because heavy lifting isn't an accident. Also, have you been to a doctor to see what's causing your back pain? Do you have fifty pounds of weight hanging over your belt? Maybe you should do some exercise and see a doctor to find out what's causing your pain, and you won't have to count on any other thing besides your own health insurance."

- Hagerstown

"This is a suggestion for The Herald-Mail newspaper. I'd like to see all of the public record items that you print in the paper, such as divorces, marriage license, and deeds changing hands, on the same day of the week. That way we would know what day to look for them in the paper."

- Hagerstown

"I am very aggravated at this business of phones being answered with Spanish when you call a business. I think it's about time we American people take back our own country. We were taught to learn English, our parents learned English, and they should too. I resent it very much. I'm not against anybody coming in here legally and earning things the right way, but not to be given everything."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"The liberals are the best friends that bin Laden has. Them bringing this out about the telephone surveillance ... it was our way of capturing him, and we would have caught him, but now that he knows and every other terrorist knows what one of our tactics is in trying to track him down, once again, he'll avoid us for a couple more years. The liberals is more worried about hating George Bush than they are the safety of the American people."

- Boonsboro

"Being an Orioles fan, I would like to know where I can get one of their schedules, and also, where is B.J. Surhoff and what is he doing?"

- Halfway

"Come on, all you right-wing conservatives who supported Bush in this war - let's get your kids and your grandkids signed up for the military. They need them over there. You support him - send your own."

- Hagerstown

"I was at the Valley Mall yesterday, and my car wouldn't start because I had left the lights on. I asked a lady in an SUV (for help) and she said 'No, I can't help you.' I had three small children in the car. A man came out who was parked beside me. I asked him, and he was glad to help me. He jump started my car and I went on my way. I just want to say thank you to that man. There are still some courteous people left in the community."
