WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Despite starting the calendar year with a significant shortage of lifeguards, Northside Pool will open Memorial Day weekend as it has done traditionally.

The gates to the municipal pool will open Saturday, May 27, and remain open that Sunday and Monday. They will reopen when school lets out for the summer, either June 7 or 8.

"The last day of school may be difficult to get guards," Borough Manager Lloyd Hamberger said.

The regular hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sundays, he said.

"We'll rent the pool (after hours) probably three times a week," said Pool Manager Brian McDowell of Chambersburg, Pa.

Applications for rental are available at both the pool and borough hall and are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, McDowell said.

The 2006 membership rates are $45 for children ages 4 to 18; $65 for adults; $120 for a family; and $55 for senior citizens.

"You get a $10 discount if you buy before Saturday (May 27)," Hamberger said.

The memberships are available for purchase in borough hall, 55 E. Main St., prior to the pool's opening.

Obtaining lifeguards was again difficult this year, according to Hamberger.

"We've hired approximately 18 to 19 lifeguards," he said, noting there is always a need for more.

A lack of available lifeguards forced officials to close the pool Labor Day weekend in 2004. Since then, they have increased the hourly rate for lifeguards and established a system of bonuses and training reimbursement.
