School board honors certified educators

Nancy Souders, a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Smithsburg Middle School who last month was recognized as Teacher of the Year, and three new national Board Certified teachers were among educators honored Tuesday by the Washington County Board of Education.

Rebecca Collinson, a student achievement specialist at Salem Avenue Elementary School; Beckie Higgins, an eighth-grade English teacher at Northern Middle School; and Rebecca Beecroft, a Western Heights Middle School science teacher, earned National Board Certification.

The other 2006 Teacher of the Year finalists were Kris Burgan, a third-grade teacher at Emma K. Doub Elementary School; Sue Lowery, a vocational-agricultural teacher at Clear Spring High School; David Warrenfeltz, a math teacher at North Hagerstown High School; and Alan Zube, who teaches pre-engineering at Washington County Technical High School.

Souders, who earned the use of a new car for the year, received a $500 check at the board meeting.


Board OKs school personnel changes

The Washington County Board of Education approved several administrative transfers, hires and resignations as part of a package of personnel moves Tuesday.

Conococheague Elementary School Principal Richard Gehrman will take over at Pangborn Boulevard Elementary School. Ryan Hench become principal at Conococheague Elementary School.

Hancock Elementary School Principal Kerry Rowe becomes supervisor of elementary math and science, while Fountain Rock Elementary School Principal Timothy Abe takes over at Hancock.

Winter Street Elementary School Principal Kathy Kelsey will become principal at Potomac Heights Elementary School and Potomac Heights Principal Archibald van Norden will move to Fountain Rock Elementary School.

Northern Middle School Principal Barbara Rice will serve as assistant principal at Clear Spring Middle School. Paul Engle, principal at Clear Spring Middle, will become principal at Northern Middle.

Springfield Middle School Principal David Reeder will become principal at E. Russell Hicks Middle School. Western Heights Middle School Principal Jennifer Ruppenthal will take over at Springfield.
