Mail Call

May 16, 2006

"This is to the person who said we need less of the crosses along the roadside. I think we should leave them there because they send a message to drivers that driving is a dangerous activity and that we need to be careful. There are way too many crosses because people drive too fast and don't obey the laws."

- Hancock

"I'm calling in response to the person complaining about people walking their pit bulls down the street. It's not the breed that makes the dog vicious. Any breed of dog can be vicious. What makes dogs violent is lack of exercise, discipline and affection. That causes behavior problems. Owners who don't want to take care of them are what makes dogs vicious, not what breed they are. I also believe that any dog can be rehabilitated. All dogs need rules, boundaries and limits, just like children."

- Hagerstown

"The County Commissioners are going to throw away $250,000 next week on Oak Ridge Drive East. This is one of the better roads around the county, and needs no fixing."

"This is to the people of Hagerstown. Let's get all the County Commissioners out. We're going to count on all you nice people in September. We want our town to change. We don't want to worry about what they're going to do next and who they're going to give thousands to, when they can't even give a few dollars to Holly Place to keep the old people from going to nursing homes."

"I'm reading in the paper again about the high gas prices. They talk about how in '83 the same thing was happening, but back then you got full service. You got your gas tank filled, your windows washed, windshield wipers checked, oil and transmission fluid checked and you were told if you were low on things. Your car was basically maintained for you. Today you don't get anything but your gas. The big oil companies are gouging us, and it just seems like nobody wants to do anything about it. I keep reading in the paper about going to little independent dealers, but where do you find them? The big companies have chased them all out of town."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm reading on the front page of the May 10 Daily Mail where it says 'County urged to spend more to fight teen pregnancy rates'. Why don't they spend this money on the elderly people for their Medicare? Some are doing without food and other things, in order to be able to get their medicine. I think this is a downright disgrace. If the teenagers don't know how to behave and control themselves when they go out, let them stay home. Let the parents see that they're doing this. Don't let them go out unless an older person has time to go with them."

- Boonsboro

"This is to the person who wanted to know if the people who voted for George Bush twice are having fun yet. I'm not exactly having fun, but considering the choices I had to vote for, it was pretty obvious that Bush was the best choice of anybody who was running. We certainly don't want a weak liberal in there who takes the side of the terrorists."

- Boonsboro

"As a public employee of the State of Maryland, I was following this Operation Restart that Public Safety was pushing in the prison system. What has happened to that? I understand that there were some pilot programs out there, but that was months ago. If our governor is pushing this program, why doesn't he push policies to keep young people out of prison in the first place? They should be learning something in school and at home, and in community programs. What is happening with my tax dollars?"

- Hagerstown

"I would like to know who owns the cats in the North End that are digging up rabbits' nest and killing the baby rabbits. It's not a pretty sight. It's also against the law. The cats should be on a leash."

"Some of the top union officials are saying to support illegal aliens. What is wrong with America? Also, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which is very prevalent in Maryland, is a key source of money in the campaign to legalize all these illegal immigrants. I think this is important for taxpayers to know. Taxpayers have to get informed."

- Hagerstown

"Does anyone know if the Williamsport High School Class of 1976 is going to have a reunion this year?"

- Maugansville

"After watching the County Commissioners hearing on the budget, I have to ask if there is anybody involved with Washington County schools whose only answer to everything isn't 'Please give us more money?'"

- Maugansville

"This is to the person who lost her Martin's grocery card on Pennsylvania Avenue. The same thing happened to me, and no one turned it in. Just apply for a new card. It's no problem - they're very nice."

"I don't know why people worry so much about Barry Bonds' record and Babe Ruth. It doesn't really matter to me and I'm no fan of Bonds, but everybody is booing him, and I don't understand that. He seems to be a pretty decent guy. He does good things with kids. Give the guy a break and let him go."

- Hagerstown
