Festival seeks artists

SHAPE Solstice Arts Festival is calling artists to sell, display and demonstrate art. The festival will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Shippensburg Township Park, Britton Road.

There are open slots for performing arts in the amphitheater, and 10-foot-by-10-foot booth space is available. This is a juried event. Applications are available online at; turn in by Monday, June 5. E-mail or mail to P.O. Box 4, Shippensburg, PA 17257.

Young performers named

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra announces the winners of two new competitions for young musicians. Six music students will perform "side by side" with MSO musicians at the annual Citi Youth Concerts Wednesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 25, and a student violinist has been chosen to perform as soloist at the concerts.

Side-by-side winners are Quinn Gelestino, clarinet, from North Hagerstown High School; Akane Fakuda, cello, from Saint James School; Heather Carbaugh, trumpet, from South Hagerstown High School; Elizabeth Pack, flute, from Ellicott City; Kelley Medcalf, clarinet, from Stephens City, Va.; and Christa Hoover, violin, from Greencastle, Pa. Madison Vest, 11, from Northern Virginia, is the winner of the student soloist competition; she will perform a movement from Mozart's "Haffner Serenade."


Gallery hosts outdoor show

Benjamin Art Gallery LLC, 1303 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, announces that "Art on the Avenue" will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20, rain or shine. The open-air art festival provides an opportunity for artists from the Tri-State region to display and sell their artwork in spaces in front of Benjamin Art Gallery.

City organizes July 1 festival

BRUNSWICK, Md. - An Old Time Independence Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, July 1.

Musical groups are invited to perform in Square Corner Park. The community is invited to become involved. Along with general help, church, civic and school groups are invited to sponsor food concession booths.
