Shepherd deals with petition against Tyler

May 11, 2006

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University Athletic Director Karl Wolf announced a procedure to address concerns expressed in a petition about the men's basketball program, and said that Ken Tyler has been asked to continue as the head coach of the men's basketball team.

Wolf and Mark Stern, vice president for academic affairs, made the recommendations Tuesday to President David L. Dunlop, who agreed with them.

On April 28, players presented a petition critical of Tyler, signed by six current and six former team members, and requested a change in direction.

Wolf asked to meet with members of last season's team. Of the 12 petition signers, six current team members and two former players agreed to meet with the athletic director on an individual basis to discuss issues. Assistant coaches were also interviewed individually.

Tyler has volunteered to institute a plan for change, focusing on communication, which the athletic director will monitor throughout the season.

Wolf met with the players Wednesday to inform them of the decision.
