Pittsburgh man identified as person killed in Turnpike crash

May 11, 2006

WILLOW HILL, Pa. - A Pittsburgh man has been identified as the person killed Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle accident in the Blue Mountain Tunnel of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said Mark L. Hatchin, 37, of 314 Elmore Square died of blunt force trauma to the head and chest in the 6 a.m. Hatchin was driving a Dodge Sprinter van west when he went into the eastbound lane and collided with a tractor-trailer, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The van then struck another tractor-trailer before coming to a stop, police said. Hatchin was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

At the time of the crash, both east and westbound traffic was routed through the westbound tunnel due to construction work in the eastbound tunnel, according to a Turnpike Commission spokesman.
