Funkstown Legion Post 211 observing 60th anniversary

FUNKSTOWN - The festivities surrounding the 60th anniversary of Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 will begin Saturday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the post.

Post Commander Gordon Cook will make introductions and speak about the history of the post, which opened in 1946.

AMVETS Post 10 will present the flags as the ceremony gets under way. Cub Scout Pack 23 and Cook will lead the pledge of allegiance to the flag, POW/MIA designation and preamble to the American Legion constitution.

Pastor Darrell Layman will give the invocation, followed by Amy Miller singing "God Bless the USA."

Historical background and anecdotes will be offered by a past post commander. Patriotic music from the Boonsboro High School Pep Band, directed by Heath Wilcox, will follow.

Ric Santos, past Department of Maryland commander and past national commander, will be the keynote speaker.

After more music by the band, there will a roll call of deceased members with a bell-tolling ceremony. In addition, certificates of recognition to the surviving charter members will be presented.

When begun in 1946, there were 123 charter members, Cook said.

The closing anthem, "God Bless America," will be sung by David E. Ridenour. Chris Mclain will perform "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes.
