Smithsburg council has two seats up for grabs

May 08, 2006|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

SMITHSBURG - Residents will determine Tuesday during a town election which of three town council hopefuls will fill two seats.

The two council seats and the mayoral post are up for election this year.

The mayor, Mildred "Mickey" Myers, is running unopposed.

Councilman Ralph J. Regan, 50, hopes to keep his spot on the five-member council. Councilman William Mills is not running for re-election and leaves an open seat.

Two newcomers - Tom Chiarizia, 29, and Dennis "Jack" Wenthe, 58 - are vying for council positions.

Chiarizia is a federal police officer who has lived in Smithsburg for a little more than a year. Wenthe, the town's Lions Club president, is an engineer for a Virginia firm.

All three candidates have pointed to growth and infrastructure as the most pressing issues the council will face this year. Smithsburg is one of the county's fastest growing towns, according to census data.
