W.Va. man charged with robbing woman, 79, at gunpoint

A Kearneysville, W.Va., man was charged Friday with robbing a 79-year-old woman in her home at gunpoint, according to a press release from the Martinsburg Police Department.

Harvey Michael Wilt, 26, of 867 Wide Horizon Blvd. in Kearneysville, was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping, according to the release.

Police said they received complaints of a person knocking on doors in the area of Rosewood Drive and Greenbrier Drive in Martinsburg.


Officer Michael Usak found the man, who would not obey verbal commands and ran away, with Usak and Officer Roger Butcher in pursuit, police said.

Butcher later used his Taser on the man to keep him under control, according to the release.

After bringing Wilt to the police department, police found a bank pay envelope and $102, according to the release.

A police investigation a short time later revealed that a 79-year-old woman on Rock Cliff Drive was robbed at gunpoint after she responded to a knock on her door, according to the release.

According to the release, a man forced the woman back inside her home while demanding money, and took $102.

Later Friday, police recovered a .44-caliber revolver in the area in which Wilt was taken into custody, according to the release.
