Group meeting open to public

May 06, 2006|By Andrew Schotz

The next meeting of the Building Community group will be Monday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at the Grand Venice Inn on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

Dan Kennedy, the group's spokesman and a founding member, said the public is invited.

With guidance from the U.S. Department of Justice, Building Community has been meeting since September 2005 to talk about racism, diversity, tolerance and prejudice.

The group is broken into five committees looking at the community, government, the media, schools and the work force.

Previously, meetings only have been open at the invitation of group members. Organizers have said the media intentionally were excluded from covering the group because it wanted to gain momentum before going public.

However, the group, trying to shed a perception of secrecy, now is inviting anyone to attend, including the media, Kennedy said.
