Largest American beech tree sought

May 04, 2006

This year, the Washington County Forestry Board is searching for the largest American beech tree in the county.

The American beech is a common forest and shade tree in this area and it can grow quite large and very old, especially when found in the open. The current state title is held by a beech tree in Anne Arundel County, which is 23 feet in circumference and approximately 115 feet tall.

Washington County already is home to eight big tree champions in the state.

Along with submission to the state register, the local winner will receive a plaque commemorating the beech tree as the largest in Washington County.

Entry deadline is Oct. 1. The largest entries will be field measured and verified by members of the forestry board.
