Chili contest set in Hancock

HANCOCK - The second annual Chili Bowl Contest will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Widmeyer Park.

Contestants must cook their chili on the spot using their own equipment which must be approved by Washington County Health Department officials, who will be at the event.

Chilies will be judged by a select group of gourmands, and then sold to the crowd to raise funds for the Re-Use Center, one of the event sponsors. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: first place, $250; second place, $100; third place, $75; best vegetarian chili, $75; best competition chili, $50.

The overall best competition chili winner will have the opportunity to compete at the regional National Chili Contest held in July in Frostburg, Md. Winner of the regional contest will advance to the nationals.

A $25 entry fee is required in advance for the chili bowl contest. Call Dave Hott at 301-678-6026 for an application.

In addition to the chili bowl there will be a karaoke and salsa competition with prizes awarded to the winners. Anyone who would like to participate in the salsa competition can bring their home made salsa to the event for judging.

There also will be a frozen T-shirt contest, which requires participants to unroll a frozen T-shirt, that has been soaked in water, rolled in a ball and then frozen, and put it on over their street clothes. The first person to complete the process is the winner.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Tri-State Re-Use Center.
