Smithsburg EMS responds to 95 calls in April

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services responded to 95 calls in April, bringing the 2006 total to 373 calls - an increase of 109 calls compared to this time last year, according to Capt. James Ulrich.

Of the 95 calls for April, 19 were within town limits.

Mutual-aid responses included 12 to Frederick County, nine to Hagerstown and two to Franklin County, Pa. Seven calls each were to the Leitersburg and Cascade areas, and another five were in the Mount Aetna area.

In all, 70 patients were taken to area hospitals by ambulance. Another two patients were transported to Baltimore by Maryland State Police helicopter - one to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and the other to Union Memorial Hospital.

The busiest day of the month was Tuesday, April 18, when 10 calls were handled.
