Crash shuts down I-81

May 03, 2006

One man was injured Tuesday afternoon in a crash on Interstate 81 that closed the highway and tied up traffic for hours.

Phillip Pundt, 47, of Littlestown, Pa., was driving a Freightliner box truck north on I-81 when he lost control of the vehicle near Exit 5 just before 3 p.m., Maryland State Police said. Pundt tried to regain control of the truck and swerved to the right, striking the left rear of a tractor-trailer that was parked along the shoulder of the road, police said.

Felix Mercedes, 41, of Buffalo, N.Y., was the driver of the tractor-trailer, police said.

Pundt was cited for failing to control his speed to avoid a collision. He was taken to Washington County Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said. He was being assessed in the emergency room about 8 p.m., a nursing supervisor said.

Mercedes was not injured. Police said the Maryland State Highway Administration assisted with traffic control.
