Ordinance will hike mayor, council salaries

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Town Council unanimously passed on Tuesday an emergency ordinance to increase salaries for the mayor and council members.

The mayor's salary will increase from $2,000 to $3,000 after the May elections. The council's salaries will increase from $1,000 to $1,500 for the 2008 election cycle.

Fire company to get $10,000 donation

SMITHSBURG - The town council, through a 3-2 vote on Tuesday, agreed to a budget line item that would grant the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. a $10,000 donation, up from the $3,000 the town usually provides.

Though the money has been given as a donation, fire officials requested the money to help hire an additional firefighter, town officials said during a work session in April.

The town's charter prevents the town from earmarking funds for specific use within the fire company, Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said during the April work session.

Council members Shirley Aurand and Thomas Smith opposed the donation.

Memorial Day event scheduled for May 30

SMITHSBURG - The town's annual Memorial Day ceremony will take place May 30 at Veterans Park, said Carlo Belella, head of the town's parks commission.

The event's featured speaker is the Rev. Mark Mooney of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Canopy and chairs will be provided.

The ceremony, which is free, begins at 6 p.m. and will end around 7:30 p.m.
