Kindergarten registration to begin

April 30, 2006

Early registration for kindergarten in Berkeley County Schools will begin Monday for the 2006-07 school year.

To be enrolled in kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old before Sept. 1, 2006. Children who turn 6 before Sept. 1 will be enrolled in first grade if they have completed an accredited kindergarten program, and in kindergarten if they have not completed a kindergarten program. Kindergarten students currently attending Berkeley County Schools do not need to be enrolled to attend first grade.

To be enrolled, the school system requires a certified birth certificate, which can be obtained for $5 by writing to West Virginia Vital Registration Office, Building 3, Room 513, Capital Complex, Charleston, WV 25305. Information about obtaining birth certificates from other states is available by calling 304-267-3510, ext. 3238. Hospital or county birth certificates will not be accepted.

The school system also requires a Social Security card and immunization records for polio, measles and DPT.

Evidence showing a series of three DPT and polio immunizations, with one for each given after age 4, and two doses of measles (rubella and rubeola or MMR) vaccine after 12 months, must be provided.

The registration schedule is:

Monday - Burke Street, Marlowe and Opequon elementary schools.

Tuesday - Bedington, Rosemont and Tuscarora elementary schools.

Wednesday - Berkeley Heights, Bunker Hill and Winchester Avenue elementary schools.

Thursday - Back Creek Valley, Gerrardstown and Hedgesville elementary schools.

Friday - Inwood Primary and Valley View Elementary School.
