Bonanza Extravaganza to have $1 million prize

April 29, 2006|By ERIN CUNNINGHAM

Ticket-holders for the Bonanza Extravaganza were expecting $750,000 in cash and prizes.

But a recent addition to the three-day fundraiser, hosted by Hagerstown's career firefighters, includes a $1 million-prize.

"We want to make our event the best," said Rick Conrad, spokesman for the International Association of Firefighters Local 1605. "Why not just blow this out of the water."

Ticket holders for the event, scheduled for May 12 to 14 at Hagerstown Speedway, are eligible for prizes that include 2006 vehicles and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, rifles, camping trailers, recreational watercraft and cash. A prize will be given away every five minutes May 13.

Friday and Saturday at least 10 people will get a chance to win $1 million. Those 10 people will each select a four-digit number. The numbers will be entered into a computer called the "Box of Destiny," Conrad said, and if the numbers unlock the box, that person wins the prize.

The $1 million prize will be paid to the winner in an annuity.

"The others will win substantial (cash) prizes," he said.

Conrad said firefighters were selling several hundred tickets per day, but was unsure how many tickets had been sold. He said the fundraiser is expected to draw 10,000 people.

After a radio promotion, Conrad said firefighters sold more than 700 tickets in two days. As many as several hundred tickets are being sold daily.

A ticket was even sold to someone in China. Ticketholders do not have to be present to win prizes, except for the $1 million prize.

"This thing is on," Conrad said.

Live music, gaming, tip jars, food, drinks and carnival-style games are planned.

Proceeds from gaming at the event will benefit local nonprofit groups.

"The people who are really going to win here are the charities we support," he said.

This the first of what Conrad said will become an annual fundraiser.

Nobody younger than 18 will be allowed at the event, and alcohol will be available for purchase for those 21 years old and older.

A professional security group and Washington County Sheriff's deputies will also be on hand.

Camping was available at the site, but Conrad said all available spots have been booked.
