Suns win again

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Hagerstown Suns got three outstanding pitching performances Thursday on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws.

Jonathon Niese, Josh Appell and Kevin Tomasiewicz combined to strike out 14 Lakewood batters and scatter nine hits as the Suns won their second straight after losing three in a row.

The Suns scored both of their runs in the top of the second inning. Nick Evans walked and moved to second on a Jonel Pacheco single.

Pacheco was erased on a double play, but Matt Anderson drew a two-out walk and scored along with Evans on Elvis Cruz's double.

Niese (3-0) worked his way out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth. John Hardy's RBI double pulled the BlueClaws within 2-1 with none out. But Hardy was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice, Julian Williams flew out and Clay Harris struck out swinging to end the threat.

Niese gave up six hits and two walks while striking out six. Appell came on to start the sixth for the Suns and gave up three hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out seven.

Tomasiewicz earned his first save by getting the last two outs.

Cruz and Fernando Martinez each had two hits for Hagerstown.

Wednesday's game in Lakewood was suspended after 17 innings with the score tied, 7-7. The game will be completed May 6 in Lakewood.
