Pythian Sisters plan basket bingo

There will be a Pythian Sisters basket bingo held at the Funkstown Moose Club on Sunday, April 30. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and bingo will start at 1 p.m.

All baskets will be filled. There will be 20 games and five specials. Tickets are $20 apiece. For tickets, call Jean Hanna at 301-733-1846 or Janet Bowen at 301-582-2520.

Food will be available for a small fee. This is a smoke- free event. Proceeds will go to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).


Choral Arts concert set for Saturday

Don't forget the Hagers-town Choral Arts Concert being held on Saturday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Kepler Theatre at Hagerstown Community College.

The concert will be presented around the theme "Poems, Prayers, and Promises." Featured on the program will be selections from the song cycle "Frostiana," which includes the poetry of Robert Frost and music of Randall Thompson, several madrigal settings by Thomas Morley and a humorous selection by P.D.Q. Bach. Other composers represented on this concert include works by Mozart, Daniel Gawthrop and Aaron Copland.

Hagerstown Choral Arts has invited several musical guests to be part of this concert; including Jennifer Manuel, a sixth-grade flutist from Clear Spring Middle School; soprano Angela Holsinger and oboist Gregory Starliper, both music majors from Shepherd University; and pianist Dr. Scott Beard, chair of the keyboard division at Shepherd.

The chorus will round out the evening with the wonderful music from the broadway play and movie "The Producers," which features lyrics and music by Mel Brooks.

Advance tickets are available at Music and Arts Center, 1337 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown and at the Washington County Arts Council Gallery, 14 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. Used book sale to be held this week

Spring is here - and so is AAUW's 38th annual Used Book Sale. It's coming up April 26-30, at the Washington County Agriculture and Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, sale hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday - which is half-price day - hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday - when you can fill a grocery bag of books for $4 - hours are noon to 3 p.m.

More than 50,000 books will be on sale, with paperbacks for 50 cents and hardbacks starting at $1. There are also records, casettes and maps. There are first editions and autographed books at the collectibles table, as well as several special volumes at auction.

Proceeds from the sale go to the AAUW Scholarship Fund, the Washington County Library and other community projects.

Basket bingo to benefit Hub Band

The North High Band Boosters are having a basket bingo at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive on Sunday, April 30. There will be 20 games of bingo and three specials. Extra packets are available. Tips, raffles, along with King Tut, will also be offered.

Doors open at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon and bingo starts at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $20 each, which includes your meal. Anyone wishing information or to buy tickets, call Pam Jamison at 301-791-5998.

Proceeds will help the Band's general fund.

Pancake breakfast set for Saturday

The West Hagerstown Lions Club will be having an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 29, from 6 to 11 a.m. at Girls Inc. on West Washington Street.

Breakfast will include pancakes, Hoffman sausage, puddin', eggs, coffee, orange juice and milk. Cost is $3.50 in advance; $4 at the door.

Historical Society to meet Thursday

The Maugansville Historical Society will meet this Thursday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the conference room of the First National Bank of Greencastle's branch office, on Maugans Avenue at Shawley Drive. Interested local residents are invited.

Senior club to meet May 2

The Maugansville Senior Friendship Club will meet Tuesday, May 2, at noon for a Dutch treat lunch meeting and auction at the TOPS Chinese Buffet in the North Village Plaza.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Bob Walton and his family. Bob's mother, Lois, passed away on Sunday. Lois will be sadly missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
