Mission team plans return to Mississippi

April 21, 2006|by MARLO BARNHART

After returning from an eye-opening trip to storm-torn Mississippi in January, a mission team from St. James Brethren Church on Lappans Road is planning to go again, leaving June 14.

"We have access to trailers of all sizes to transport materials, but we would like to be able to fill them," said Krista Bowers, organizer of the trip.

Bowers, who was on the earlier trip to Pass Christian, Miss., said one of the biggest problems was the lack of available building products to get residents back on their feet after the devastating hurricanes.

"It was a major impediment waiting to get the stuff to do the work," Bowers said.

Bowers said everyone needed building materials and there was only so much to go around. Sometimes they would return from stores with nothing.

The St. James volunteers cleaned up debris, help build weather shelters and made food for victims as well as other volunteers. The group will be taking supplies with them this time.

Another member of the St. James team, Kristy Burgan, said the group is asking local businesses to donate any building materials such as lumber, drywall, shingles, nails and screws - anything needed to build a house.

The group is willing to pick up donations. Monetary donations will be accepted.

Donations sent to the church should be marked as Mississippi Missions Donations.
