Nobel Prize winner to give lecture and poetry reading

Nobel Prize-winning poet Derek Walcott will present a lecture and poetry reading at Mercersburg Academy, Monday, April 24.

Walcott won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992 for his book-length poem, "Omeros."

The poem is a retelling of Homer's "The Odyssey," set in Walcott's native St. Lucia, a Caribbean island.

Caribbean fishermen are the focus of this odyssey, which explores Caribbean colonial history.

Walcott is also known as a writer, accomplished playwright and founder of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop. He has published more than 20 plays.

Catch Walcott's lecture, "The Odyssey," at 7 p.m. Monday at the Mercersburg Academy Chapel, 300 E. Seminary St., Mercersburg, Pa.
