MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Someone was shot during an attempted burglary either late Tuesday or early Wednesday, and the incident is under investigation by police, a Berkeley County (W.Va.) Sheriff's Department official said Wednesday.

Capt. K.C. Bohrer said police were investigating a series of burglaries that occurred overnight Tuesday in Berkeley and Jefferson counties and resulted in the hospitalization of one person who was shot.

Bohrer said Wednesday afternoon that the shooting victim was undergoing surgery at a local hospital.

An abandoned car discovered Wednesday afternoon along Shepherd Grade Road in Jefferson County was being considered in connection with the burglaries, Bohrer said.
