Suns blank Captains

April 16, 2006

EASTLAKE, Ohio

Fernando Martinez smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning Saturday afternoon, lifting the Hagerstown Suns to a 3-0 win over the Lake County Captains before a crowd of 5,151 at Classic Park.

After Matt Anderson led off the inning with a single, Martinez, the youngest player in the South Atlantic League at 17, snapped a scoreless tie with his first home run as a pro, coming off Captains reliever Matt Loberg (1-1).

The Suns added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Leivi Ventura.

Four Hagerstown pitchers combined on an eight-hitter. Starter Sal Aguilar went five innings, giving up seven hits. Kevin Tomasiewicz (1-0) threw two scoreless innings, Josh Appell worked 1 2/3 innings and recent Suns addition Marcelo Perez - a familiar face from last year - recorded the final two outs.
