If you film it, nerds will come

April 11, 2006|by BRAD SMITH

"The Benchwarmers" is a new movie released last Friday starring Rob Schneider, David Spade and Jon Heder, better known as the main character in "Napoleon Dynamite."

On the surface, this movie looks like nothing but a film filled with stupid humor and an excuse for Jon Heder to get hit in the head a lot. And that's what it is.

OK, so I lied. There is a story and a rather good one at that. A group of nerds way past their high school days form a three-person baseball team to play exhibition games against standard-sized Little League teams. This draws the attention of a millionaire businessman.

It is a true underdog story that really makes you think about how you treat other people.

I do think that Heder's "Napoleon Dynamite" character really set the stage on how his character Clark was portrayed in this movie. It is a fact that us so-called geeks will love this movie, but I think it is safe to say that everyone will like this movie.

I give "The Benchwarmers" 9 baseball bats out of 10.

"The Benchwarmers" is 80 minutes long and rated PG-13 for crude and suggestive humor, and for language.
