Washington County students win Young Authors Contest

The Washington County Reading Council and the State of Maryland International Reading Association Council recently announced the winners of the Young Authors Contest.

One poem and one short story were selected at the local level from each grade level from second through 12th grade.

Winners will be honored during a banquet Friday, May 12, at the Four Points Sheraton in Hagerstown.

Washington County had three winners at the state level, according to a press release from Washington County Public Schools. They are:

  • Anna Baldasarre, an eighth-grade student at Smithsburg Middle School, won first place for her short story.

  • Elizabeth Kramer, an eighth-grade student at Northern Middle School, won first place for her poem.

  • Kate Sweeney, a sixth-grade student at Northern Middle School, won second place for her poem.

Washington County Young Authors winners at the local level are:



  • Samuel DeJesus - short story, fifth grade, Paramount Elementary School.

  • Madeline Dunn - short story, fourth grade, Paramount Elementary School.

  • Rebekah Hurwitz - poem, third grade, Eastern Elementary School.

  • Katelyn Muse - short story, second grade, Greenbrier Elementary School.

  • Adam Peters - poem, fifth grade, Greenbrier Elementary School.

  • Elizabeth Scrivener - poem, fourth grade, Greenbrier Elementary School.

  • Taylor Tracy - poem, second grade, Fountaindale School for the Arts and Academic Excellence.

  • Kaytie Wilkinson - short story, third grade, Greenbrier Elementary School.

Middle School

  • Anna Baldasarre - short story, eighth grade, Smithsburg Middle School.

  • Samantha Burnette - poem, eighth grade, Smithsburg Middle School.

  • Abigail Clopper - short story, sixth grade, Springfield Middle School.

  • Elizabeth Kramer - poem, eighth grade, Northern Middle School.

  • Kate Sweeney - poem, sixth grade, Northern Middle School.

  • Laura M. Wagner - poem, seventh grade, Northern Middle School.

High School

  • Anastasia Greene - poem, 12th grade, Williamsport High School.
