It's a good thing I only buy drip-dry clothes

April 09, 2006|By MARK KELLER

I think my shirt is still dripping from my morning at the Washington County Girls Softball League opening ceremonies. ... "You know a woman didn't plan this," my daughter's coach - a woman - said at the ceremonies. Hey, we're not all as stupid as they make us out to be in commercials. ... What's the point of setting a rain date if you're not going to use it? ... It doesn't sound like Brett Favre is trying to figure out whether or not he wants to play football, he's still considering whether he wants to play for a bad football team, which the Packers are right now. ... My bet: Favre is waiting for the Packers to cut him so he can latch on with another team and use the ol' "they didn't want me, so I'll show them" motivation. ... I won't cop to picking the Maryland women to winning the NCAA Tournament before it began, but I did tick off some Ohio State fans in the building by saying they would win their region (which included the Buckeyes). ... I'll admit I haven't watched a lot of women's basketball in the past - and I probably won't in the future - but the Terrapins' last two games were far more exciting than anything the men's tournament produced in the Final Four. ... That said, it was nice to see some different teams in the men's Final Four this year. ... It's probably a little late to do any more Billy Packer bashing (talk about beating a dead horse, he's been one of those for years), but his statement that we'll NEVER see another George Mason-like run in the NCAA Tournament is ridiculous. I'll take the side of UConn coach Jim Calhoun, who said the time is coming when a No. 16 seed beats a No. 1. ... I'm a Jim Larranaga fan after watching how he handled his George Mason team throughout the tournament, but I'm a bigger fan after hearing him turn down big-time jobs to stay at GMU. ... Is Gary Williams now the second-best basketball coach at Maryland? ... Is Orioles pitcher Daniel Cabrera listening to Leo Mazzone? ... There's no way Alfonso Soriano will be with the Washington Nationals by the beginning of July. Old-school manager Frank Robinson has to be going nuts watching Soriano mope around the field. ... I'm not a Barry Bonds fan by any stretch, but you can't just dismiss as a joke a fan throwing a fake syringe at him while he was on the field this week. I'm sure the father-son duo who attacked Kansas City Royals coach Tom Gamboa in 2002 saw that as a joke, too. Ha ha.
