Suns slammed in 9th

April 08, 2006

Gaby Sanchez hit a one-out walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a five-run rally Friday to lead Greensboro to a 9-6 victory over the Hagerstown Suns.

It was the second straight game the Suns (0-2) lost after carrying a lead into the late innings.

Hagerstown called on Brandon Nall (0-1) to close out a 6-4 advantage, but the side-arming right-hander got in immediate trouble against two pinch hitters and couldn't escape.

Trent D'Antonio drew a leadoff walk before Matt Kutler was hit by a pitch.

Greg Burns hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to one before Agustin Septimo drew a walk to load the bases.

After Nall collected a strikeout, Sanchez launched his home run to left to end the game.

It was the second straight night the Suns dominated the first half of the game before letting the second half slip away.

Hagerstown jumped out to a 6-1 lead on the strength of a pair of two-run home runs in the third.

Nick Evans hit his second homer of the season and Jonel Pacheco hit his first in the four-run inning to stake starting pitcher Jorge Reyes to the five-run cushion.

The Suns scored their first two runs in the second on Elvis Cruz sacrifice fly and Jonathan Schimmel's single off Greensboro starter Aaron Thompson.

Greensboro picked up four single runs, one in the second and fifth against Reyes and one in the seventh and eighth off reliever Joe Serfass.

Greensboro reliever Daniel Barone shut down the Suns in the last three innings on one hit while striking out seven to get the win.

Fernando Martinez, Evans and Schimmel had two hits each for the Suns.
