You Said It

"I see where the commissioners are going to vote on fee increases on April 18, for water and sewer rates and the 40 West Landfill permit tipping fees. The reason people don't show up is because they know they're going to raise fees anyhow. We have an election coming up, so just get them out of office and we won't have to worry about it anymore."

- Washington County

"I read in The Morning Herald about raises for county employees, and it's very reassuring to know that Commissioner Doris Nipps supports merit increases for county employees. However, what about the forgotten county employees, the ones who have topped out in their job classifications and get no raise at all? There are several of us."

"I want to thank the girls at Country Fair Beauty Salon for giving me a wonderful haircut and making me feel really good."

"I'm calling in response to the comment about the difference in gas prices in the U.S. and the rest of the world. Apparently, they haven't traveled much, because in the rest of the world they have trains and buses that run on time. Also, for hundreds of years, most people have ridden bicycles, so it's not a good comparison."

"On April 4, I found a bank deposit envelope from Martinsburg, W.Va., at the Food Lion on Virginia Avenue. I gave it to the cashier, so if you need it, you can find it at the Food Lion on Virginia Avenue."

"I read in Mail Call that someone said that we can't do anything about gas prices, so we should just accept it. I guess we couldn't do anything about discrimination, so we should accept it. I guess we couldn't do anything a woman's right to vote, so we should accept it. Get with the program. There is always something you can do."

"I was visiting a friend at a mobile home park in the Halfway area, and I noticed that in the mornings, the school buses stop for the little kids at the entrance of the park. It's a three-way intersection, and I thought it was very dangerous. There is no sidewalk or much of a roadside for the children to walk on. Why do they stop there? In the evenings, the school bus goes the whole way around the park. Why can't the morning bus go the whole way around? It would be a lot safer."

"I'm calling about the statement that the mayor made about racism in the April 4 paper. He doesn't think it's that bad, or of much concern in Hagerstown. I'm originally from Richmond, Va., and I moved here about six years ago. Walking into Hagerstown is like walking into the Twilight Zone. Some of the things going on here that they're doing, they did 30 years ago. Evidently, the mayor needs to walk in an African American's footsteps and live an African American's life before he can make that statement. The racism here is horrible. It's awful. Young African American men cannot even walk down the street without being stopped. I have two sons, and they are stopped constantly. If the mayor wants to make a remark about racism, he needs to know what he's talking about."
